Treatment Options for Male Sexual Abuse Survivors

We offer several evidence-based therapies that have been shown to be helpful for men who have experienced sexual abuse. Together, we’ll develop a plan that works for you.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR helps the brain process traumatic memories so they feel less distressing. You don’t need to talk through every detail of your trauma to find relief. Many men experience significant progress in just a few sessions.

ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy)

ART is a cutting-edge therapy that blends visualization and rapid eye movements to reframe traumatic memories. It’s known for its speed — often resolving trauma in just 1–5 sessions. Trailhead Counseling is one of the few providers of ART in the Overland Park area.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Your story matters, and with CBT, we’ll help you put your story into words while addressing unhelpful beliefs you’ve developed because of your abuse. With CBT, you can begin to change the way you think about yourself, others, your abuse, and God.

One in six men will experience sexual violence in their lifetime, but most never tell a soul.
At Trailhead Counseling, we’ve seen how deeply silence can shape a man’s life—causing shame, confusion, anger, and distance from others.

You might relate to some of this:

  • You told someone, but they didn’t believe you.

  • You were told you “wanted it,” or “should have stopped it.”

  • You’ve questioned your masculinity, faith, or worth.

  • You’ve tried to bury the memories, but they still return—through nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, or numbness.

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not broken. You’re reacting the way human beings do when something terrible happens—and it’s never too late to heal.

Why Male Survivors Often Stay Silent

The Lies Men Are Told About Sexual Abuse

  • “My body responded, so I must have enjoyed it.”

  • “I should’ve been strong enough to stop it.”

  • “Men can’t be sexually abused.”

  • “I’m weak for letting this affect me.”

None of those are true. Your body’s responses are automatic physiological reactions—not consent. Abuse is never your fault.

  • Feel scared, confused, ashamed, or angry

  • Try to forget about the abuse or pretend like it didn’t happen

  • Not tell anyone because you’re afraid of how they might react

  • Experience nightmares, flashbacks, panic attacks, or upsetting memories about the abuse

  • Dissociate, or feel disconnected from your environment or your body

After experiencing sexual abuse, it’s normal to…

None of these reactions are reasons to feel ashamed, but they are good reasons to seek help.

Is what happened to me really abuse?

If someone did something sexual to you without your full, informed, and freely given consent — it was abuse.
It doesn’t matter:

  • How old you were

  • Whether you froze and didn’t fight back

  • If your body responded physically during it

  • If the person was older, a partner, a friend, or someone you trusted

  • Whether you were pressured, manipulated, intimidated, or confused

Many men question if what happened to them “counts” because:

  • They didn’t say “no,” but they also didn’t or couldn’t say “yes”

  • Their body responded in ways they didn’t want

  • They were young, or didn’t understand what was happening

  • The other person acted like it was normal or no big deal

  • They’ve been told men can’t be victims

But none of those things erase what happened.

Abuse isn’t defined by how “bad” it seems compared to someone else’s story — it’s defined by the absence of real consent and the presence of power, pressure, or exploitation.

How Therapy Helps Men Heal

Process what happened safely

At your own pace and in your own time, we’ll help you share the story of your abuse, identify areas of resilience, and correct any negative beliefs you’ve picked up along the way.

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means learning how to live without constant shame, fear, or self-blame.

Therapy can help you:

Manage triggers and symptoms

You’ll learn how to manage your symptoms so they have less impact on you. Then, we’ll reprocess the memories of your abuse using EMDR or ART so they’re no longer distressing.

Rebuild trust and relationships

Has your abuse made it difficult to get close to others? Life is most meaningful when it’s full of deep relationships, so we’ll help you build real relationships with trusted people.

What happens in sexual abuse therapy?

  • One of the most important parts of sexual abuse therapy is establishing a relationship built on mutual trust and respect.

  • We need to make sure your environment is safe and that your basic needs are met before processing your abuse. I’ll also teach you coping skills you can use to manage your symptoms.

  • Whenever you’re ready, we’ll revisit your abuse using a treatment plan that feels right for you. This will be hard work, but I’ll be with you every step of the way.

  • Reconnection is about building healthy relationships with the people you love. Healthy relationships heal abuse, and we need to make sure you have people in your life who can support you on this journey.
